The Europa League restarted last night with the home teams all performing well and progressing into the next round of the competition, Copenhagen, Manchester United and Shakhtar Donetsk being the teams to progress in this manner. They were joined by Inter Milan, who saw off Getafe in their one-legged tie.

Champions League – Round of 16 Matches & Qualifiers

  • Manchester City (2) v (1) Real Madrid
  • Bayern Munich (3) v (0) Chelsea
  • Barcelona (1) v (1) Napoli
  • Juventus (0) v (1) Lyon

Already qualified for the quarterfinals – Red Bull Leipzig, Atalanta, Paris St Germain, Atletico Madrid.

Odds & Ratings for each team to win the Champions League Outright

Quarterfinalists

Atletico Madrid – 8/1

Having despatched current holders Liverpool in the last round, somewhat fortuitously, Atletico now face Red Bull Leipzig in the quarters and I think they have the quality to get the better of the Germans, however I think the semifinals against Paris St Germain most likely, is where this team will come unstuck, especially over a one-leg tie.

Atalanta – 9/1

The Serie A third-placed team have been a revelation the last couple of seasons and have done superbly well to reach this stage of the tournament, however, they now face Paris St Germain in the quarterfinals and I think this is where there dream will end.

Paris St Germain – 5/1

For me, outside of Manchester City, Paris St Germain are the team to back in this year’s tournament. Already through to the quarterfinal, with a favourable draw in both this round and potentially the next, avoiding the bigger teams, I think Paris St Germain will make it to the final and as such, they may well be a decent each way bet.

Red Bull Leipzig – 14/1

Having easily got the better of Tottenham in the last round Red Bull Leipzig face a much sterner test in the quarterfinals against Paris St Germain. They have a puncher’s chance in this game I feel, but I would expect PSG to end their interest in the competition at this stage.

Round of 16 Teams

Manchester City – 16/5 favourites

Holding a lead from the first leg in Spain, Manchester City should get past Real Madrid in the Round of 16 and will then face Lyon or Juventus in the quarters. I’d expect Pep’s men to progress there too into the semifinals. They are favourites in this competition for a reason and I do feel they are the team to back to win this outright.

Real Madrid – 20/1

If any team has the European pedigree to come back from a 2-1 deficit on the road it is Real Madrid. Having won all ten of their games since the restart to claim La Liga, they will have their eyes focused on this tie, but even so, I still feel Manchester City

Bayern Munich – 7/2

For many people, Bayern are the favourites to win the tournament this year after a stellar performance over the latter half of the season, drawing just one game in 23 and claiming the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal Cup in the process. They will despatch Chelsea and they are well capable of beating Barca or Napoli to make the semis. They are more than good enough to win this trophy.

Chelsea – 200/1

3-0 down from the home leg in London and now facing a trip to take on a team that has won 22 of their last 23 games and has snapped up the double in German soccer over the last month or so. You can pretty much write off Chelsea’s chances.

Juventus – 16/1

When you have Cristiano Ronaldo in attack, anything is possible but Juve face a real tricky test against an awkward Lyon side. Then the draw after that has not been too kind to them either. I think they could make the quarterfinal, but there they meet Man City or Real Madrid and that could be as far as they go.

Lyon – 75/1

Not generally considered one of Europe’s elite teams, Lyon do have the advantage over Juventus and their form in Turin is not too bad. Always a difficult side to beat, while they could cause an upset and knock out Juventus, I can’t see them having enough to win the tournament unfortunately.

Barcelona – 9/1

They haven’t been at their best for a couple of seasons now but they are still formidable opponents, especially at home. However, I do think there are a number of stronger teams in this competition and I think a quarterfinal spot may be as far as this Barcelona team goes in the tournament this year.

Napoli – 66/1

Having already won the Coppa Italia this season, Napoli will finish with a trophy but their chances of progressing against Barcelona are not great, as even an empty Nou Camp is usually too much for teams taking on Messi and company. They will try to keep things tight but in the end I think Barcelona’s attack will find a way through and eliminate them at this stage.
