Matchday 26 Review and Bundesliga Weekend Preview

May 21, 2020

Although there were a few critics who bemoaned the lack of fans, the Bundesliga return last weekend was generally viewed as a success by many. The games and atmosphere may have been a little unusual compared to normal, but the quality on show from the players, especially given the circumstances was excellent, especially from the teams in the top six.

This weekend the teams are back in action and it is a crucial weekend at the top of the table with four of the top six battling it out against each other. Borussia Moenchengladbach face Bayer Leverkusen in one game while sixth-placed Wolfsburg will welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Volkswagen Arena in the other big game at the top of the table.

Let’s now take a look at how the first weekend on the return to action in the Bundesliga panned out for the 18 teams participating.

Bundesliga Results – Matchday 26

  • Hoffenheim 0-3 Hertha Berlin
  • Augsburg 1-2 Wolfsburg
  • Dortmund 4-0 Schalke 04
  • Dusseldorf 0-0 Paderborn
  • Red Bull Leipzig 1-1 SC Freiburg
  • Frankfurt 1-3 Borussia Moenchengladbach
  • FC Cologne 2-2 Mainz
  • Union Berlin 0-2 Bayern Munich
  • Werder Bremen 1-4 Bayer Leverkusen

Those results saw a slight change in the top six with Bayern remaining top ahead of Dortmund by four points, with Borussia Moenchengladbach moving into third ahead of Red Bull Leipzig who are now just one point ahead of Bayer Leverkusen in fifth. Wolfsburg are a little further adrift, 11 off Leverkusen above them in the table.

At the bottom of the table Hertha Berlin were the big benefactors last weekend, their 3-0 win at Hoffenheim moving them up to 11th, while the teams below them really didn’t improve their chances any with a string of losses and just a couple of draws to their name.

Let’s now take a look ahead to the nine games scheduled to take place this weekend.

Bundesliga Preview – Matchday 27

Hertha Berlin v Union Berlin

The Berlin derby kicks off the action this weekend on Friday night. Of the two teams Hertha come into the game in the better form having registered a superb 3-0 win last week. Union though weren’t disgraced losing 2-0 at home to Bayern and they will be up for this derby match. However, I just feel with home advantage and the nature of their win last week should have Hertha flying here so I am backing the home side to land a narrow win at 13/10.

Borussia Moenchengladbach v Bayer Leverkusen

Third faces fifth in what is a crucial game for the Champions League placings next season and what could yet have a bearing on who wins the title in a few weeks time. Both sides are in good form heading into the game, but it is Leverkusen’s that is the best and they are really on a roll at the moment, as evidenced by their 4-1 win over Bremen in Bremen on Monday. Borussia are so hard to beat at home and they did beat Bayer in Leverkusen back in November 2-1. It will be close, so I feel a draw is the best bet here at 3/1.

Paderborn v TSG Hoffenheim

Both of these teams are struggling for form and in truth, I don’t really feel either of them is a good bet in this game. Usually, that would mean a draw is the best bet as both teams will seek primarily to avoid defeat. However, I just feel Hoffenheim will want to bounce back after a couple of awful results and away to the bottom side is a good place to do that. Back Hoffenheim for a nervy win at 11/10.

SC Freiburg v Werder Bremen

Freiburg did well to earn a point at Leipzig last weekend while Bremen were awful in their 4-1 home defeat to Leverkusen on Monday night. The former Champions of the Bundesliga are really struggling and I think they will follow the likes of Cologne and Hamburg in being relegated this season. Back Freiburg to land the win in this game at 23/20.

VfL Wolfsburg v Borussia Dortmund

Sixth takes on second in the table but there are 15 points between the two teams and that gulf in class was very apparent when they met in Dortmund in November, when the home side ran out 3-0 winners. Wolfsburg’s recent form has improved, they are unbeaten in seven Bundesliga games now following their win in Augsburg, but Dortmund are flying and desperate to keep on the heels of Bayern ahead of their huge clash with the league leaders on Tuesday. Take Dortmund to win and both teams to score at 11/5.

Bayern Munich v Eintracht Frankfurt

Bayern sauntered to a 2-0 win away to Union Berlin last Sunday, with the champions barely forced out of second gear for that game. They beat Frankfurt 5-1 in Frankfurt back in November and with the visitors out of sorts after a humbling 3-1 defeat at home last weekend, this is going to be a very tough afternoon for the visitors. Back Bayern to win this one big a 4-0 correct score prediction is a 9/1 shot.

Schalke 04 v Augsburg

These two teams didn’t perform to their best last week, Schalke were well beaten in their derby game with Dortmund while Augsburg defensively went to sleep to lose at home to Wolfsburg. Of the two though, they are the team I feel have the better chance of winning it despite the respective league positions of the two. However, I can’t see Schalke dropping more points here so I am backing the draw at 5/2

Mainz v Red Bull Leipzig

Red Bull have now drawn five of their last seven Bundesliga games and those ten dropped points have seen them fall well off the pace at the top of the table, a place they occupied until recently. Mainz battled back well against Cologne last week to snatch a draw, but they’ll need to be even better here to do something similar. It is time for Red Bull to get back to winning ways and I can see them doing that here. Take Red Bull to win at 4/9.

Cologne v Fortuna Dusseldorf

Cologne bosses will have been disappointed to see a great performance and a 2-0 lead thrown away against Mainz last time out, but I feel they won’t be so generous this time around. Dusseldorf have struggled for goals all season and defensively they do concede too many. A clean sheet at home to Paderborn is nothing to get excited about, so I am backing Cologne to land a confident win here at 4/5.
