The Online-Only Way To Improve Your Game

Yes, we love playing poker in the flesh. We also love playing poker online. That last one is a given, we know, given the site we write for. There are benefits to both online and offline play. And there are some things that you can do way more effectively offline. But there are LOTS of things that you can only do online. And today we’re going to talk about one of them. Poker multi-tabling.

What is poker multi-tabling?

Poker multi-tabling, simply put, is playing more than one poker game at the same time. You can see why that would be trickier online than offline, right?

What are some of the benefits?

The best thing about poker multi-tabling is that you can fit so much more action into your gaming session. Things just move a hell of a lot quicker. So instead of waiting around for some bozo to make up their mind on what to do with a mediocre hand (we can almost see the cogs turning when they consider a “clever” bluff), you can be checking out the action at another table while they make up their mind.

As well as that, you’ve got the opportunity to make more money during your poker session too because quite simply you’re playing more games. Of course, you’ve also got the danger of losing cash faster too, which leads us to our next point…

What are some of the dangers of multi-tabling?

The big danger with poker multi-tabling is biting off more than you can chew. That’s when mistakes start happening. That includes upping your stake levels too fast and playing at too many tables. So what we would suggest is getting comfortable at your stake level before even starting multi-tabling. Then try adding another table or maybe two. Once that feels good and you’re making more profits than losses on average, try upping your stake level very slightly.

On many online poker sites you can play at well over a dozen tables at once. But if you want our advice, leave anything over four or five tables to the professionals. Or at least until you feel like you can play the game in your sleep.

Of course, you also need to set out a budget of how much you’re willing to lose in a session. This is a poker no-brainer in general, but losses can mount up fast in the fast paced world of multi-tabling. Then once you make a budget for your session, stick to it.

Another danger of multi-tabling is that you stick at it way too long. Sometimes multi-tablers can spend hours at a session. This is because the time goes a hell of a lot faster when you’re playing lots of games at once. And as we all know, spending too long on the felt can lead to big mistakes. So decide how long you’d like to play and don’t go over it.

If you want to overcome these common multi-tabling pitfalls, set a time and money budget and make sure you up stakes and add tables slowly.

How can I make multi-tabling easier?

Poker multi-tabling definitely takes a bit of getting used to, but there are some things you can do to make life a little easier on yourself. The first thing is to avoid the dangers, as pointed out above. Next up is to make each table as easy to read as possible. We’d suggest using a four-colour deck. If you do that, each suit has its own dedicated colour and you can see at a super quick glance what’s a diamond and what’s a heart. We know it might sound ridiculous, but you’d be surprised how many red and black suit related errors result when you’re multi-tabling.

For similar reasons, we’d recommend changing the table themes so you can easily spot which table is which. Simple themes work best.

Another thing is to make sure you disable sound effects because that can be extremely distracting. To be honest, we prefer all poker without sound effects. Even when we’re playing live, we wish we could mute certain players!

If you can, it’s worth taking a few notes too on the big hands at each table. When you’re multi-tabling, you’re never going to be very comprehensive with your notes, but even quick ones might help you out of a bind later on.

Where can I do poker multi-tabling?

Poker multi-tabling is open to you as an option in many online poker rooms, but not all. So if you’re interested in poker multi-tabling, it’s useful to know a trustworthy site where you can do it. We are big fans of the multi-tabling options at bet365, where you can play at up to 16 tables at a time! Of course, only if you’ve worked your way up to it. As previously discussed, it’s not smart to rush your multi-tabling career!
