Simon Deadman Is Rising, Sam Trickett Has a New Home, and More

Sam TrickettIn this week’s look around the world of UK poker we’ll detail some recent triumphs in the lives of two British poker players, one of whom has already made it to the top of the poker world and the other being a rising star that has been dominant in the early stages of 2014.

We’ll also take a look at the very interesting voting tabulations used by Bluff Magazine in determining the British Poker Award winners, which uses several different criteria depending upon the award in question.

So sit back, relax, and get ready for another informative column as we cover all of these stories and a whole lot more in this week’s installment of Around UK Poker.

Rising star Simon Deadman

It’s been a very good start to 2014 for English poker player Simon Deadman. A very good start, as the longtime poker grinder has logged at least one big score in every month of 2014 thus far.

In January Deadman booked back-to-back six-figure cashes with a runner-up finish at the Genting Poker Series London Main Event and a runner-up finish at the EPT Deauville in a $2,500 NLHE tournament – these were the first six-figure cashes of his career which extends back five years.

But he wasn’t done there. A few weeks ago in February he added another runner-up finish, this time at the Genting Poker Series Birmingham stop, and a further $45,000, to his 2014 tally.

Most recently Deadman added to his collection of runner-up finishes (maybe he’s allergic to trophies?) finishing second in the recently concluded GUKPT Manchester Main Event, adding a further £39,500 to his year’s haul.

Deadman’s impressive start to 2014 has him in Player of the Year contention, landing him in the #6 spot on Bluff Magazine’s POY leaderboard, and in 22nd place on the GPI’s POY rankings.

Sam Trickett joins Everest Poker

While Deadman is surging towards the top of the UK leaderboards, a man who is already there (arguably in the number 1 slot) has landed a new sponsorship deal.

Earlier this week Everest Poker announced it had signed Sam Trickett to a sponsorship deal. And in honor of landing one of the biggest names in poker, Trickett and Everest came up with the idea of rewarding Everest players with 10% of Trickett’s haul at the 2014 WSOP, Big One for One Drop excluded.

“I’m very excited to be joining Everest Poker and I’m looking forward to interacting with our players online and at Everest Poker Live events, where I’ll be playing and coaching,” Trickett said in a press release.

Trickett went on to say, “Everest is a great poker brand and I will be doing everything I can to make it one of the most recognised in the world.”

“We want to encourage players to get behind Sam’s quest for a first bracelet this summer and we’re excited to reveal that Sam will be offering players the chance to share in 10% of his winnings in the 20 to 30 bracelet events he enters this year, excluding the One Drop. With Sam’s consistent record of cashing at high profile tournaments there could be a huge amount of value on the table,” Everest Poker’s Des Duffy stated in regards to the promotion.

He added, “I think for players who can’t make it to Las Vegas themselves, having a share in Sam Trickett will be the next best thing.”

BPA voting system

CalvinAyre.com’s Becky Liggerio recently broke down the voting process Bluff Europe Magazine uses to determine the winners of the British Poker Awards with the help of Bluff Europe’s Michael Caselli.

There are three separate ways votes are cast:

  • A public vote that allows the general public to vote on the predetermined nominees
  • A committee vote where the nomination committee votes for the winner
  • A peer vote in which Bluff polls people in the poker industry (players and media) to choose a winner

In the article at CalvinAyre.com you can see precisely how the votes are tabulated and why Bluff decided to use each system.
