There are several different ways of looking at Six Plus Hold’em. Some people wonder why bother mess with a classic, Texas Hold’em is fun enough as it is. And for those people, maybe this relatively new spin isn’t for them. But for others who are looking for a thrilling, high variance version of the game, Six Plus Hold’em is a godsend.

We’re going to give you the full lowdown on Six Plus Hold’em so you can decide if this is the next game you should be playing on the felt. You never know, it could turn out to be your new go-to.

Where did it come from?

It should come as no surprise that Six Plus Hold’em has its origins in Asia. In Asia, players are always looking for new ways to spice things up in the casino and there are a lot of high variance fans. It was developed in 2014 and now it’s one of the hottest games in poker rooms across the continent, especially in Manila, Macau and Hong Kong.

It garnered a lot of popularity among high stakes players in particular and has since spread across the world. Oftentimes online poker rooms are the great equalisers, bringing something once thought niche or exclusive to the masses. And that happened with Six Plus Hold’em just a couple of years after its creation. Since 2016, bet365 players have been able to treat themselves to a game of Six Plus Hold’em whenever they want. And luckily, they’ve got tables to suit every budget, so it’s no longer a preserve of the high rollers among us.

If you fancy giving it a shot yourself, simply head to bet365 and give it a whirl. If you haven’t signed up yet, here’s this handy bet365 bonus code so you can get a spectacular welcome offer.

The basics of Six Plus Hold’em

Six Plus Hold’em is just like Texas Hold’em but without the lowest ranking cards. That means the deck is stripped of twos, threes, fours and fives. Fewer cards mean a smaller deck, hence in some quarters Six Plus is called short deck hold’em.

It’s such a simple idea, but it leads to a brand new twist on the game. Think about it. Fewer cards mean that certain combinations are going to come up way more frequently than in regular hold’em. That leads to a whole new set of odds and way more high value hands throughout the game. It also gives us a slightly different hand ranking.

In Six Plus Hold’em:

  • Three of a kind ranks higher than a straight
  • Flush ranks higher than a full house

Apart from that, the ranking is the same as the usual Texas Hold’em we all know and love. Game play is the exact same as Texas Hold’em too, in terms of betting rounds, etc. But you should adjust how exactly you play to put the best foot forward on the Six Plus Hold’em felt.

With all these high value cards flying around, it’s a good idea to play a little bit more conservatively. After all, it’s way more likely that you are dealt an Ace. But the same goes for the other players at the table. And keep in mind too that suited hands are stronger here than in regular Hold’em too.
