“Summer of Sam” Rolls On, Simon Deadman Wins HPO, and More

Sam TrickettBrits have been struggling to get in the winner’s circle at the 2014 WSOP (just one bracelet win in 64 events) but they have been making final tables and there are also some railbirding online players with a combined 10% piece of Everest Poker’s newest pro, Sam Trickett, are already getting about $7,000, thanks to a promotion run by Everest to commemorate the signing of Trickett.

Trickett still has one more tournament to play, and that tournament has a $10 million first place guarantee, the WSOP Main Event.

In this week’s look Around UK Poker we’ll fill you in on how the Summer of Sam promotion is going, which UK poker players were the latest to cash in at the WSOP, whether or not Simon Deadman managed to finally break his string of second place finishes, and a whole lot more.

Trickett’s 10%

When Everest Poker signed poker superstar Sam Trickett just before the 2014 World Series of Poker, they made his personal success a win for their whole community as some lucky players would receive 10% of Trickett’s 2014 WSOP winnings (minus the Big One for One Drop) in what they called the “Summer of Sam.”

So far Trickett has had a lackluster WSOP by his standards, with two cashes totaling just under $70,000, but there is always the WSOP Main Event. And as we’ve come to expect from the UK star, he seems to save his best performances for the biggest stage.

Top performances by British poker players at the WSOP

You can add another four final tables to the British tally, bringing them up to an impressive 19 this year. Unfortunately those 19 final tables have only resulted in a single bracelet win.

  • Lynne Beaumont finished 6th in Event #51, the $1,500 Monster Stack tournament, collecting $273k.
  • Richard Milne finished 8th in Event #56, a $1,000 No Limit Holdem tournament for $39,000.
  • Haresh Thaker finished 8th in Event #63, the $1,500 6-handed 10-Game Mix tournament, booking a $13,000 score.
  • Javed Abrahams was the runner-up in Event #64, the $10k PLO tournament, just missing out on the second bracelet for the UK, but the $570k payday should soften that blow.

Richard Ashby also added to his impressive 2014 WSOP with a 10th place showing in Event #61, the $10k Seven Card Stud Championship. This marks Ashby’s third top 10 finish this year.

Simon Deadman FINALLY takes one down

After six runner-up finishes in 2014 rising star Simon Deadman has finally gotten the monkey off his back with a win in the Hollywood Poker Open Main Event.

Last week we told you how Deadman was rolling along in the Hollywood Poker Open final table, and this week I’m happy to report that Deadman has finally broken through, and done so in style with his biggest payday to date, a $350k score.

Simon is now fast approaching a million year on the tournament trail, and is a serious Player of the Year contender. Simon is 36th on the Global Poker Index Player of the Year rankings, 11th in the Bluff.com rankings, and 17th in the Cardplayer.com standings.

Deadman is also ranked 5th among UK players on the GPI 300 index.

UK News Bites

Newey cashes in One Drop

Sam Trickett started off the Big One for One Drop where he left in 2012 (minus his heads-up loss to Antonio Esfandiari of course) but a repeat performance wasn’t in the cards for Trickett, or for Antonio for that matter, as Antonio bubbled the final table after holding the chip lead at certain points on Day 2 of the tournament.

Another Brit did manage to cash in the tournament, Paul Newey. Newey finished in 7th place, collecting a $1.5 million payday.

Of course the big story of One Drop was the winner, Daniel Colman, who touched off a bit of a firestorm with his decision to keep his comments curt after the momentous win.

Online gambling bad for your health?

According to the European Commission it is! The Commission is seeking to have warning labels (like those that appear on packs of cigarettes) to be added to online gambling ads.

While I understand the general idea of what they are trying to do I’m still trying to figure out what the label will say?

Online gambling could lead to watching football matches between Crystal Palace and Stoke City.

Online gambling could lead to excessive usage of the phrase, “it was a 100-1 shot.”

Caution! Online gamblers are known to throw keyboards and wireless mice in random directions. Head on a swivel people.
