Return of Hendon Mob

The Hendon Mob Redux, Lee Davy Wants Answers, and More

Return of Hendon MobThere wasn’t a lot in the way of big poker news over the past week, but we do have a lot of fun stories to cover this week including the Hendon Mob coming back under a new banner, Lee Davy’s thoughts on the US-centric nature of the poker media, and one of the best online poker players in the game offering up some advice in a popular UK newspaper.

Unfortunately, we also have one extremely heartbreaking story to cover this week as well, as a well-liked UK poker player was the victim of a senseless murder this past week.

We’ll bring you all this and more in this week’s installment of Around UK Poker.

Hendon Mob resurfaces with a new name

Last July the Global Poker Index purchased The Hendon Mob (not the actual players, that would be illegal, just their website and brand), creating the most comprehensive tournament database and ranking system in poker.

While the GPI and Hendon Mob were integrating and advancing tournament coverage, the original Hendon Mobbers have sort of been lost in the shuffle. What had become of the group that had been together for over a decade?

Well, now we have our answer, as three quarters of the original Hendon Mob have signed a new sponsorship with Grosvenor Casinos.

Ross and Barny Boatman and Joe Beevers are now known as the “Pokermob” and have restarted one of the things that made the Hendon Mob website so popular with UK poker players in the first place, an online poker league, which will of course be played at the Grosvenor Casino online poker site.

People often forget that the Hendon Mob was far more than a tournament database – it was a thriving community of UK poker players. Perhaps the “Pokermob” can bring that back.

So where is the other quarter of the Hendon Mob? I’m sure Ram Vaswani will eventually surface somewhere.

PokerNews.com has all the details regarding the new league.

Alex Millar pens column for British Newspaper

It’s not too often you see a poker article in one of the biggest print newspapers in the world, but that’s precisely what happened when UK online poker superstar Alex “Kanu7” Millar offered up five tips for beating the game in the Daily Telegraph.

Here are the five topics Millar covered:

  1. Be sensible about what stakes you play.
  2. Don’t try to put your opponent on a specific hand.
  3. Be consistent with your bets.
  4. Every bet counts – don’t lose your head.
  5. Learn from losing – channel your frustrations.

Is the Bluff Power 20 to US-centric? Lee Davy thinks so

The Bluff Power 20 is supposed to be a snapshot of the most powerful/influential/popular people in poker, and as is always the case when you have panel voting (especially 60 different people listing their 20 weighted choices) there is bound to be some controversy.

One person who was left scratching their head over some of the selections, or better put some of the omissions, was poker writer Lee Davy, who wondered where the Europeans were, specifically GPI and Hendon Mob owner Alexandre Dreyfus.

Davy, who is one of my favorite poker writers, got the distinct impression that the ballots were a bit US-centric, especially towards regulators and lawmakers who are probably complete nobodies to Europeans. Lee wondered aloud:

And who were these 60 industry insiders anyway? Why is the list kept hidden from our eyes?

Is it because the poker world will see that the list is primarily made up of Americans all voting for people who have influence over the American system?

I do know one voter (you’re reading his work right now) so Lee and anyone else interested can check out my ballot if they want to: Breaking Down My Bluff Power 20 Ballot… As you can see, Lee and I agree on many of his points.
