Who Wins This Week’s FA Cup Fifth Round Ties?

Eight matches, 16 teams remain in the FA Cup Fifth Round this week. Who will make it through to the quarterfinals stage?

The FA Cup Fifth Round is usually played on a weekend during the spring, but the shortened nature of the 2020/21 season means that for this year, all the games take place during midweek, starting tonight with two games and then the remaining six will be played on Wednesday and Thursday evenings this week.

A host of top Premier League sides along with four teams from The Championship remain in contention to win the FA Cup this season, but the favourites will be Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea, while the likes of Everton, Leicester City and West Ham will all be eyeing up one of the most coveted prizes in English football.

As with the earlier rounds of the competition (and the rounds going forward) there are no replays this year, with extra time and penalties used to decide the winner of each tie on the night if required. A change I can see being implemented full time in this competition in the future, despite protests from lower league teams.

With plenty at stake, little wonder that FA Cup Fifth Round week is a popular one for bettors in the UK and if you would like to join in the fun with a bet on the games yourself and need to sign up with a quality betting service that offers excellent sports betting markets across a myriad of sports, the latest bet365 New Player Bonus is a great place to start.

Let’s now take a closer look at the eight games taking place this week and we will give you our tip for how we see each one going.

FA Cup Fifth Round Ties

Tuesday 9th February

Burnley v Bournemouth

Sean Dyche won’t have been too unhappy to draw Championship Bournemouth. Not only have the Cherries sacked their manager last week, but Burnley have won five of the last six between the teams and all the last four games. Dyche clearly knows how to get one over on Bournemouth and I think that this makes Burnley, with home advantage also in their favour, the strong favourites to win this game and progress into the quarterfinals.

  • Match Tip – Burnley to win – 5/4

Manchester United v West Ham

Which Manchester United home performance will we get? The one that swept Southampton aside 9-0? The one that threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Everton or the one that lost 2-1 to Sheffield United? The home side are so flaky at Old Trafford this season it is tough to call. West Ham are a good side in good form but I just feel they find it tough against some top sides like United and as such, I am just about opting for the home side to land a narrow win.

  • Match Tip – Manchester United to win – 8/13

Wednesday 10th February

Swansea City v Manchester City

These two teams played out a cracking cup tie a while back with Swansea losing a 2-0 lead and City coming back to win 3-2. I can’t quite see the same drama being played out here as Manchester City are in such dominant form at the moment it is hard to see anyone beating them. Swansea have only lost four times in the Championship this season but they will find Manchester City much to tough a nut to crack here.

  • Match Tip – Man City to win – 2/9

Leicester City v Brighton

Brighton are in a great run of form at the moment with just one defeat in their last nine games. Leicester’s home form this season is poor, and they have lost to Brighton at home already this season in the Premier League. However, I think the Foxes want silverware and I think Brendan Rodgers will pick a strong side here. Brighton will make it tough and I think extra time and penalties may be needed to decide the winner, but I think Leicester will just about make it through.

  • Match Tip – Draw – 14/5 (Leicester to qualify)

Sheffield United v Bristol City

Bristol City are in the middle of the table in the Championship but Sheffield United are bottom of the Premier League so this could be a close one. However, with their EPL future looking bleak, I think Chris Wilder will want to give the Blades fans a good cup run to enjoy and as such, I am backing them to knock out a second Bristol team from the competition this season, having already eliminated Bristol Rovers in an earlier round.

  • Match Tip – Sheff Utd to win – 4/6

Everton v Tottenham

I will admit that this game I did change my mind on when I heard that Harry Kane was fit again for Tottenham. The England captain is such a huge influence on this Spurs team that even if he starts from the bench, he can change the game. Everton’s home form isn’t great and Spurs have a good record at Goodison in recent years and as such, with Kane available again, I am backing the visitors to land the win.

  • Match Tip – Tottenham to win – 17/10

Thursday 11th February

Wolves v Southampton

This is a game that strikes me as being a very close battle between two teams whose recent form is not great and who do not score many goals. As such, I feel a 1-0 win is the most likely outcome. Having lost their last five in the Premier League, it is a lot for Southampton to go to Wolves and pick up a win here. Especially with all the injuries they have. Wolves have been hit by injuries to key personnel too, but I am backing them to grab a narrow win here.

  • Match Tip – Wolves to win – 11/8

Barnsley v Chelsea

I don’t think Chelsea will be too daunted heading to Yorkshire to face Barnsley. The London side have recorded some big cup wins over the Tykes over the years and in truth, the quality of Barnsley’s squad is absolutely nowhere near the class of Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel has got three wins in his last three games with his new Chelsea team and I would expect them to continue that improved form with another solid win here.

  • Match Tip – Chelsea to win – 3/10
