Can you find playing different poker types a little challenging? Well we’re going to give you ways to supercharge your game with this Six Plus strategy.
Six Plus is a really brilliant variant of hold’em, in case you didn’t already know. Game play proceeds with a shorter deck, resulting in way bigger hands and fireworks on the felt.
But even if you’re a beginner to the game, there are certain things you should know so that you keep on top of things when you’re playing. And, if you’ve played a lot before, but tend to tank almost every time, these tips might be useful to show you where you’re going wrong…
1. Keep reminding yourself about the different hand ranking
It’s basic, yes, but one thing we find again and again is that people tend to just plain forget about the differences in hand rankings in Six Plus strategy. Repeat after us: a full house is stronger than a flush and a three-of-a-kind is stronger than a straight.
2. Change the way you think about a top pair or a top kicker
Because all cards from five and under are eliminated with Six Plus, you’ve got to remember that everyone’s chances of having higher value hands have skyrocketed. Sure, maybe you will win with your top pair. But the chances of this versus regular hold’em are simply smaller. So don’t overplay with this kind of hand.
3. Act with caution with week offsuit kickers
Like we said before, top pair isn’t quite so valuable in the world of Six Plus strategy. The same can be said for two pair and straights. So if you’re relying on an offsuit kicker, this weakens your hand more than it might in regular hold’em.
4. At the same time, suited kickers just got a little sweeter
Flushes are more valuable in Six Plus than regular hold’em, so adjust your expectations upwards when it comes to suited kickers.
5. It pays to be aggressive with a strong draw
After the flop, things seem to be looking good for you. If you’ve got your hold’em hat on, you might tend to hold back a little. But this is Six Plus strategy talking now. You should actually play this aggressively. It’s more likely that a semi-bluff here will pay off if you go in with a big bet. So be brave, even if it’s outside of your usual poker personality.
6. When you’ve got a poker pair, call that 3-bet
Speaking of aggressive moves, 3 bets can be intimidating. We get that. But when you’ve got a pocket pair at a Six Plus table, we always suggest you call! That’s because you’ve got an increased shot at hitting three-of-a-kind. Plus in the world of Six Plus, it’s also a stronger hand than a straight. So what’s stopping you?
7. Don’t forget to find a good place to practice
If you’re thinking about going on a poker trip (and have the bags packed!) and you want to play Six Plus while you’re there, you need to get some practice in first.
