Test Your Limits: Your PLO Factsheet

Pot Limit Omaha is a staple game in the world of poker, both online and offline. If you’re not up to speed on the game yet, we’ve got a few PLO FAQs to answer for you so you’ll be in the know ASAP.

PLO FAQs

How many hole cards are you dealt in PLO?

You get four hole cards in PLO. And they are, of course, facedown, private cards so keep them to yourself!

Are the betting rounds the same in PLO as Texas Hold’em?

Yes, they are. Pre-flop, flop, turn and river betting rounds play out the exact same as in Texas Hold’em.

How does the showdown work in PLO?

Now this is one of the trickier PLO FAQs. The showdown in PLO works a little differently than Texas Hold’em.

The winner of any showdown has got to use at least two hole cards in order to make your five-card poker hand. And the aim is to get the highest scoring cards.

Many people forget that two hole card rule when they start playing PLO!

What is the minimum bet allowed in PLO?

In PLO, the minimum bet has to equal the big blind.

What is the maximum bet in PLO?

The maximum bet is whatever the pot size is. That makes sense when you think about the name Pot Limit Omaha, right?

Is PLO more exciting than hold’em?

A lot of players think it is. Because of all those hole cards, higher value hands come up way more frequently in PLO. That can lead to very exciting games altogether!

In that respect, it’s a little like playing Six Plus Hold’em.

Are the hand rankings the same in PLO and Texas hold’em?

Yes, they are exactly the same. From the royal flush as the best to just a high card as the worst. But due to the nature of PLO, it’s fairly rare for someone to just score a high card hand.

Where can you play PLO?

Even though PLO is a big deal, it’s still not necessarily available in every single card room all the time. If your local card room isn’t terribly big, it probably won’t have regular PLO tournaments or cash games.

But a good online poker room will always have a range of exciting PLO games on offer. One of our favourite spots to play online is bet365. And if you’re a new player, you can use this bet365 bonus code when you sign up.

Common mistakes when you’re playing PLO

There are a few errors people make again and again when they start playing PLO. Here are just some of them and how to combat them.

Over valuing your hand

As previously discussed, the frequency of high value hands increases with PLO due to the fact that you’ve got four hole cards instead of two. That means Texas Hold’em players often put way more stock into hands that are only middling in PLO.

Avoid that by brushing on the probabilities of PLO hands vs Texas Hold’em hands.

Getting confused over pot bets

If you’re playing at home or even in a card room, especially when you’re just starting out in your PLO journey, it’s easy to lose track of exactly how much the pot bet is.

And it’s, of course, so crucial to know the value of the pot in PLO. One great way to get around that? Play online until you’ve got the knack of calculating the pot down. That’s because online, it’ll always say on the screen what the pot is worth.

Forgetting to use two of your hole cards at showdown

Like in hold’em, the aim of the game is to make the best possible five card hand at showdown. However, hold’em lets you use as many or even none of your cards to achieve this.

In PLO, you’ve got to use at least two or your hole cards. Anything less than that and it’s not valid.
