1. The Premier League 2022/23 starts on 6 August 2022
So not long now until the action gets going for real. Mark it in your diaries!
2 This is the 31st (and sort of 124th) Premier League
The 2022/23 Premier League season is going to be the 31st in football history. However, anyone who knows a thing or two about Premier League history will know that this follows in the tradition of closely related top flight English football. If we’re taking all of that history into account, it’s sort of the 124th season.
3. Premier League 2022/23 is taking a World Cup sized break from 21 November
The Qatar World Cup is getting underway right smack bang in the middle of the Premier League. Of course, so many players will also be donning their nation’s jerseys on the world stage. So it only makes sense that there’s a break.
4. The action resumes on 26 December
With the World Cup ending on 18 December and then a little break for rest, recovery and Christmas dinner, the Premier League will be back at it on Boxing Day, aka, 26 December.
5. The season ends on 28 May, 2023
Between those two dates there is going to be a wealth of action, mark our words.
6. 20 teams will take part in this season’s league
Seventeen teams will continue on from the Premier League 2021/22, while three will graduate from the Championship.
So far, we know that the teams definitely participating are:
- Aston Villa
- Brighton & Hove Albion
- Crystal Palace
- Leeds United
- Leicester City
- Manchester City
- Manchester United
- Newcastle United
- Nottingham Forest
- Tottenham Hotspur
- West Ham United
- Wolverhampton Wanderers
7. Full fixtures are released on Thursday, 16 June

8. Substitutions are changing for the 2022/23 Premier League season
To bring substitutions in line with other major European football leagues, there is going to be some changes made. From 2022/23 onwards, each team can make up to five substitutions during the game or at half time. Historically, this figure has been three.
